Self-assessment is the act or process of looking at, analyzing and evaluating oneself or one’s actions. It is used to assess aspects that are important to one’s identity, and is important because it often leads to new insights or an awareness of areas that need to be improved. It helps close any knowledge gap, and is something that enables people to gain understanding, exert more control and claim responsibility for their own professional and personal development. Thus, self-assessment is said to be a reflective activity that also develops meta-cognitive skills.
